We purchased the Tall Winds Motel in October of 1998. I was a friend of Dan Prinzing who had owned and operated Tall Winds for many years. One day while talking with Dan he made the comment that we should buy the motel as he was ready to retire. I was at the time working for Sherman County in the Juvenile Department and father to a young and growing family. My wife España wanted to be working but we both wanted our children to be raised by their parents and not spend many hours a week in daycare. We determined that we could purchase Tall Winds (with the assistance of my parents) and that we could learn and run the business together while raising the family on site.
España would manage the business and family while I was working a few blocks away at the courthouse. After nearly 5 years at Tall Winds España discovered that the Travelodge in Biggs was for sale. We determined that we had learned a great deal and had a desire to grow. This led to the purchase of the larger 40-unit property in Biggs.
We initially hired management for the Traveloge, now Three Rivers Inn, while we continued to reside at Tall Winds. After about 18 months we decided that we needed to be at the larger property so moved to Biggs and found management for Tall Winds. I continued to work for the county for another year or so then chose to resign so we could devote our full time to the businesses and family.
This is a little long-winded but this is the story of how we fell into the lodging business. Family is critical to both of us and that is really what led to our belief that the business model could work for us. Once in business for ourselves, we have come to enjoy it and worked hard to make our businesses successful.
